‘My Life In Post-it Notes’ started as a relatively small series back in 2006, as part of  a wider ‘Identity Art’ series. I’ve been using post-it notes as an artistic medium for around 10 years, and have a produced a collection of over 1000 works in that time. The following post-it note artwork dates from February – October 2010.

Inspired by Tamany Baker’s photographic series ‘Living With Wolfie’, my poem is a eulogy to a garden bird. The bird has a rich history in symbolism, and in this context can be seen to symbolise the flight of man’s soul from the physicality of the body. Liberation-

Inspired by Tamany Baker’s photographic series ‘Living With Wolfie’, my poem is a eulogy to a garden bird. The bird has a rich history in symbolism, and in this context can be seen to symbolise the flight of man’s soul from the physicality of the body. Liberation-

The visual counterpart to my poem A Falling Through, we are presented with a figure, framed by long theatrical curtains forming a corridor into a bright white light. In the figures offered hands, a garden bird lies motionless. The leminscate symbol, which represents infinity, can be seen here above the figure’s head. The word leminscate is actually Latin for ribbon, a length of which if twisted and fixed together at both ends produces an infinite looping two-dimensional plain.

I imagine a process whereby identity is simplified into a wall of coloured lines, each one slowly transforming and becoming a different thread of personality, experience and ambition. This dissolution into colour is an act of unity. All becomes one, and one becomes all.

At the edge of understanding, a figure looks out to sea. The incomprehensible infiniteness of possibility lies before him, softened with the rhythmic ebbing and flowing of the waves, he stands lost in deep contemplation. This was the first painting completed in my series ‘A Falling Through’, the inspiration for its colouration having originally come from The Pipes Of Pan by Picasso.

The cycle of life is perfectly expressed in the iconic sunflower, which produces seeds from which it is later ‘reborn’. In the Sunflower the seeds grow from the centre outwards, turning slightly with the growth of each new cell. This results in a spiral that perfectly matches a mathematical pattern known [...]]]>

The cycle of life is perfectly expressed in the iconic sunflower, which produces seeds from which it is later ‘reborn’. In the Sunflower the seeds grow from the centre outwards, turning slightly with the growth of each new cell. This results in a spiral that perfectly matches a mathematical pattern known as the ‘golden sequence’, which is deeply coded into nature.

The Ferryman is a subtle acknowledgment to the beautiful novel ‘Siddhartha’ by Hermann Hesse, in which Siddhartha, a Brahmin’s son, departs on a life-long journey of self-discovery, eventually meeting an old ferryman with whom he learns the secrets of the river; that which is everywhere and nowhere all at the same [...]]]>
